FAQs

1. What is the Speakeasy Reading Club?

We are a small, in-person gathering where people come together, enjoy a cocktail and read quietly for an hour. No phones, no talking during the reading time, just a calm room and a good book. Afterward, people are welcome to stay and chat if they want, but there’s no pressure. It’s simply a space for people who miss being able to focus and read alongside others.

2. What does the entry fee include?

Your ticket covers your seat for the reading session and one drink, either a cocktail or a non-alcoholic option. If you’d like anything beyond that, it’s available for purchase separately.

3. Can I come if I’m not drinking?

Yes. Drinking is completely optional. There will always be a non-alcoholic option available, and you’re welcome to just come, have something simple, and read.

4. Do I need to bring my own book?

Yes. Bring whatever you’re currently reading, or something new you’ve been meaning to start. There’s no assigned book and no discussion during the reading hour. We encourage people to unplug from their phones, but e-readers are welcome.

5. How long does the evening last?

Plan on about two hours total. There’s time to arrive and get settled, one full hour of quiet reading, and then some optional time afterward if you feel like staying and talking. Of course you are welcome to stay at our host bar beyond the two hours if you wish.

6. Will it be completely silent?

It will be mostly quiet, similar to a library. During the reading hour there’s no conversation, but you may hear normal background sounds like drinks being served or people turning pages.

7. I’m introverted — will I feel out of place?

Not at all. Many people come on their own and keep to themselves. You’re welcome to arrive, read quietly, and leave without socializing if that’s what you prefer.

8. Do I need to reserve a spot?

The space is intimate, and space is limited. Yes, we ask that all guests reserve their spot.

9. Can I bring a friend?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend or partner. We just ask that everyone respects the quiet reading time. Since alcohol is served, this is an adults-only event, so please leave children and pets at home.

10. What about phones?

We ask everyone to silence their phones and put them away during the reading hour. If you’d like, we can hold onto your phone for you until the session ends. If you need to check it for an emergency, that’s fine — just step out quietly.

11. What kind of drinks will there be?

We offer a small, rotating menu that usually includes mezcal cocktails, wine, sparkling water, and non-alcoholic options. The selection may change from event to event.

12. Is there a dress code?

There’s no dress code. Come as you are and wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.

13. Can I get a refund if I can’t make it?

We don’t offer refunds because space is limited, but you’re welcome to transfer your ticket to a friend. Just let us know their name and email ahead of time so we can update the guest list.

14. Will this be a one-time event?

No. This is something we plan to host regularly. It started in Mérida, Mexico in 2025, and we’re beginning to bring it to other cities as well.

15. What is the policy about e-readers?

We encourage people to bring a physical book if possible, since part of the idea is to take a break from screens. That said, e-readers like Kindles are, of course, allowed if that’s how you prefer to read.
