FAQs
1. What is the Speakeasy Reading Club?
A hidden hour carved out of the ordinary — a room where lamps burn low, pages turn softly, and strangers settle into a shared silence. It’s a refuge for readers who crave stillness in a loud world. A community of people brought together by their shared love of reading and desire to immerse themselves in a story, pausing all technological distractions for a set time.
2. What does the entry fee include?
Your ticket is a small key.
It opens the door, reserves your seat, and grants you one drink — a cocktail or its sober cousin.
Anything else you choose to indulge in is your own cost.
3. Can I come if I’m not drinking?
Of course. The night welcomes all — those who sip, those who abstain, and those who simply want a glass in hand while they read. There will always be a non-alcoholic beverage option.
4. Do I need to bring my own book?
Yes. Please bring the story you’re already reading. Or bring a new title.
No assigned reading. No analysis. Just your book and the quiet joy of being alone together. We promote unplugging from technology for the event, but electronic readers are allowed.
5. How long does the evening last?
Long enough to unwind.
Expect about two hours: a gentle arrival, a sixty minute stretch of pure reading time, and an unhurried afterglow where conversation is optional, never required.
6. Will it be silent?
Mostly. Think library hush, softened by the clink of glassware and the occasional sigh of someone lost in a sentence.
During the reading hour, words stay on the page.
7. I’m introverted — will I feel out of place?
This night is built for you.
You can slip in, find your corner, sip, read, and leave without uttering a single word. No pressure. No performances. Just presence.
8. Do I need to reserve a spot?
The space is intimate, and space is limited. We ask that all guests reserve their spot.
9. Can I bring a friend?
Absolutely. Bring a friend, a partner, or even a visiting bookworm from afar.
As long as they respect the quiet, they will belong. In order to maintain a serene environment with alcoholic drinks being served, we ask that you please leave the children at home.
10. What about phones?
Phones go dark. We strongly encourage all guests to refrain from their devices during this evening.
We offer the option to tuck them away for you for a short, sacred pause from their incessant buzzing and blinking.
Let the world wait for you, just this once. (Of course, in the event of an emergency you will be allowed to use your device. Quietly.)
11. What kind of drinks will there be?
Expect mezcal cocktails with a whisper of smoke, thoughtful non-alcoholic creations, sparkling water, and wine — the menu shifts with the season and the mood.
12. Will there be food?
Yes. The venue offers a full menu (this cost is apart from the entry fee).
Please order after reading time, to ensure that the silence is not disturbed during the quiet hour.
13. Is there a dress code?
Only this: be comfortable.
Some guests lean vintage, some arrive casual.
But truly — you are your own aesthetic.
14. Can I get a refund if I can’t make it?
Generally you may pass your ticket to a friend who could use an hour of quiet, just please let us know who will be attending in your stead for our planning purposes. No direct refunds will be paid because of the limited number of spots we have available.
15. Will this be a one-time event?
No — this is the beginning of something.
A monthly ritual. A gathering of readers who understand the beauty of turning inward together.
A small tradition born in Mérida, shared in whispers.
16. What is the policy about e-readers?
Because this event intends to have attendees take a momentary pause from our devices, use of e-readers like Kindles is discouraged. However, we will not prohibit those who choose to read on a device from doing so.
